The importance of volunteerism can be assessed several ways. The Corporation for National and Community Service reported that 61,199,000 Americans volunteered in 2006, for a value of $152 billion.
The Coalition for Charitable Organizations says this number is understated. It believes the value of volunteerism is closer to $252 billion.
In Delaware, approximately 185,000 Delawareans gave an outstanding 20.8 million hours of volunteerism valued at $392 million. The generosity of individuals in helping others is further exhibited by their more than $205 billion in charitable contributions.

this is a lot better than tennessee, where i learned this past weekend that they rank #37 nationally in volunteerism. what’s their state nickname? oh yeah… the volunteer state. eeek!
no, but seriously — what it may be more about is getting folks to think about their supporting non-profit organizations, schools, and other charities as volunteer service. one thing is clear… with more americorps members, the mindset changes and volunteers will be looked as a much more valuable resource. and one to be leveraged!
